PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 1 February 2009

Last week we showed some amazing photographs of the waterspout at Sumner, Christhurch. This week we have included some more photographs from that fantastic storm.

Mark Braithwaite

'I really enjoy and use your weather site. You may be interested in the attached photo where I managed to snap this lightning bolt during a spectacular electrical and rain storm over Christchurch. I was a bit lucky to get the exact moment of the strike. We had some intense rain and hail and non-stop lightning and thunder for several hours. The shot is looking west from the Port Hills over Christchurch city. Photographer: Mark Braithwaite Camera: Panasonic Lumix FZ7, Time/date: 17:02 Sunday 18 January 2009, ISO: 100, F 5.0, Shutter speed: Speed: 1/100 sec regards Mark.'

Paul Moss

Paul's photograph of a sun halo was taken at 12:46 on 12 January 2009.

Murray Dann

'Hi James, We had an incredible buildup of cumulus clouds this morning. Photos were taken at 11:00 Sunday 18 January 2009, with a Sony T70 camera on auto setting. Photos were taken from Port Hills Road, Christchurch. Direction was facing north east with the sun high in the sky. These clouds passed over we had to wait until 18:00 before we had rain, hail, thunder and lightning and 30mm of rain in 30 minutes. I enjoy your weather photos' wrote Murray.

Andrew Hamer

'.....this is what we saw from St Martins in Christchurch, on 18 January 2009 - a truely biblical cloud with a bright silver edge and soaring beams bursting out from the sun behind it. Canon A570 1/500 F8 ISO 80' wrote Andrew.

David Cameron

'Good morning James, I took this photo at 14:00 19 January 2009 at 3000 feet over Feilding township whilst towing a Grob Twin Astir glider with the Piper Pawnee belonging to the Wanganui - Manawatu Gliding Club. The Cumulus were brilliant and offered superb gliding for about 6 hours yesterday. A great way to spend Wellington Anniversary Monday. Taken pointing North with a Canon Ixus 75 set to automatic. (Haven't really got time to set F stops etc whilst flying....) David Cameron.'

Rachel Roberts

Rachel had a photograph of lightning in last week's Photo of the Week. Here is another of her photographs taken during the same storm on 18 January 2009.

Shirley Herbert

'Keep up the great work' wrote Shirley, 'my picture was taken early evening looking down Manukau Harbour not long before a storm hit Auckland. The sky was pretty amazing Camera used was Sony DSC-H2 on Auto. Thanks again for a wonderful site.'

Hugh Jellie

Hugh wrote 'I have been looking at sunsets from our batch at the Granite Quarries towards the northern tip of the Coromandel Penninsula for 50 years and cannot remember one like this. Taken sunset on Christmas Day 2008 at 20:48 on FinePix f10 digital camera. Weather fine and calm - been a beautiful day. Looking over Rangitoto and Rakinos.'

This is a nice photograph of a sun pillar Hugh. Well worth the wait?

Anette Becher

'Here is one I took 21:15 18 January 2009, Kaikorai valley, Dunedin sunset with my Fuji Finepix S6500D. We drove home from Poolburn via Middlemarch and I took many photos of the spectacular dark, foreboding clouds. I hope you like them.' wrote Anette.

Taryn McQuinn

This a photo that I took from Spirits Bay in Northland on the 5 January 2009 while on holiday. it was taken from top of a hill at Spirits Bay, looking west towards Pandora and Cape Reinga at sunset using a Canon Powershot SX110is (using variable settings as indicated in the file properties)' wrote Taryn.
